Introduction: Obsessional symptoms, as one of the major issues in the mental health of adolescents, are caused by the influence of early maladaptive schemas. However, the difference between this mechanism in boys and girls has not been well identified; Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and obsessive symptoms in adolescents with the moderating role of gender.
method: Based on a correlational design, 300 male and female students studying in Isfahan city in 2021-2022 were selected by cluster random sampling method and were asked Yang's early maladaptive schemas questionnaire and Maudsley's Obsessive-Practice Inventory. they answered Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation, Fisher's Z and multiple regression tests with SPSS-26 software.
Results: The results of the correlation test showed that there is a relationship between the initial maladaptive schemas and dimensions of obsessive symptoms in teenagers. Also, the results of Fisher's Z test showed that gender can moderate the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and dimensions of obsessive symptoms; The results of the regression analysis also showed that the early maladaptive schemas play a greater role in explaining the overall obsession score of male adolescents than female adolescents. In addition, the vulnerability schema in male adolescents is the best predictor of total obsession score, while in female adolescents, the best predictor of obsession total score is dependency schema.
Discussion and Conclusion: In general, the results of this research, in addition to supporting the role of schemas in obsessive-compulsive symptoms of adolescents, showed the moderating role of gender in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and the dimensions of adolescent obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The results of this research can help therapists in the field of obsession to use different treatment measures for different dimensions of obsession in girls and boys, in order to achieve higher therapeutic effects.
