Abstract

Introduction: Mental health does not only mean the absence of symptoms of pathology and disease, but also means the presence of positive symptoms of mental health. The aim of the present study was to determine the psychometric properties of the positive mental health scale based on Rasch's model.

Method: This was a quantitative and descriptive research that analyzed quantitative data based on the analyzes obtained from students' responses to the scale of positive mental health based on the Rasch's model. Therefore, the study was psychometric. The sample consisted of 609 students of Farhangian University in Tehran in the academic year of 2022-2023, who were selected by available sampling method and completed the positive mental health scale.

Result: The results of exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis showed the existence of a dominant factor. the results of the confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the results of the exploratory factor analysis. none of the items showed local dependence. therefore, the single-factor hypothesis of the scale was verified. based on the partial credit model (PCM), the values of the Infit and Outfit indices were between 0.5 and 1.5 and indicated the fit of the scale items with the Rasch model. the difficulty index of the items was obtained at an average level (-0.2008 to 0.1486). the results of the items' curves showed that all the items have good desirability. the scale had measurement stability based on gender. no differential item interaction (DIF) by gender was found. Person-item reliability coefficient was 0.88, Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.86, and McDonald's Omega coefficient was 0.84.

Discussion and conclusion: The results of the study showed that the positive mental health scale is a one-dimensional tool with desirable psychometric properties for measuring positive mental health in students and it can be used to evaluate interventions in this field.
