Effectiveness of marital enrichment package based on Islamic teachings on couples' marital satisfaction

Introduction: Marital satisfaction is the most important and essential factor for the stability and durability of a joint life, and Islamic teachings will be a reliable guide for a stable and satisfying marriage. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of the marital enrichment educational package based on Islamic teachings on the marital satisfaction of couples.

Method: The current research was a semi-experimental type with an experimental group, a control group and a pre-test, post-test design with a two-month follow-up. The statistical population of this research was the couples referring to two counseling centers in Tehran, 40 couples were selected in a targeted way and randomly replaced into two experimental groups (20 couples) and control group (20 couples). The experimental group received weekly intervention as a group in 12 face-to-face sessions, 12 face-to-face sessions and 3 training camps. Both groups were evaluated in the three stages of pre-test, post-test and follow-up using the Enrich Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using non-parametric Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests.

Findings: The results showed that the intervention of the marital enrichment program based on Islamic teachings on marital satisfaction and the subscales of Marital Satisfaction, Communication, Conflict Resolution and Idealistic Distortionin couples of the experimental group was significant compared to the control group(P<0.002). The follow-up test also showed that the effect of training was lasting and significant(P<0.001).

Discussion and conclusion: Based on the study results, the use of the marriage enrichment package based on Islamic teachings, which is a culturally appropriate intervention program, can be effective in increasing marital satisfaction. Therefore, counselors and psychologists can use this package in their interventions to increase marital satisfaction of couples.
