Abstract

Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome, a chronic and often debilitating functional disorder of gut-brain interaction, is a public health challenge that affects work, social engagement, and the psychological well-being. The purpose of the present study was to investigate structural equation modeling of the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and psychological well-being of patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Method: The present research is the correlation. The statistical population was patients with irritable bowel syndrome who referred to Gastrointestinal Health Center, Alzahra Hospital in Isfahan city in year 2023. The sample size was selected based on Kline model (2023) and with convenience sampling of 300 patients. Data collection tools included the Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC) of Campbell‐Sills & Stein (2007), cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire (CERQ) of Garnefski and et al (2001) and psychological well-being scale (PWBS) of Ryff (1989). Statistical analysis of data was performed using SPSS version 28 and AMOS software.

Result: The results showed that maladaptive cognitive regulation emotion (sig=0.002, β = -.68) and adaptive cognitive regulation emotion (sig=0.002, β = .73) has a significant direct effect on psychological well-being. Finally, resilience (sig=0.001, β = -.71) has a significant direct effect on psychological well-being and was able significant mediating role in the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and psychological well-being. Also, proposed model had an acceptable fitness to the data (RMSEA=0/026 p<0/05).

Discussion and conclusion: It can be concluded that according to the significant mediating role of resilience, it is possible to reduce the occurrence of psychological well-being in patients with irritable bowel syndrome by using effective interventions such as emotion regulation and resilience training.
