Assessing the Psychometric Properties of the Persian Form of Self-Construal Scale (SCS) in University Students

Abstract

Introduction: The concept of self-construal, defined as an individual’s perception of the self in relation to others, represents a fundamental construct in cultural psychology. The Self-Construal Scale (SCS), comprising two subscales of independence and interdependence, assesses different dimensions of this construct. Given the central role of self-construal in psychology and the limited availability of validated Persian instruments for its assessment, the present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the SCS among university students.
Method: A total of 507 students from the University of Tehran were selected through convenience sampling and completed the Persian version of the Self-Construal Scale (SCS), along with the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood Scale (TIV) and the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27 and R version 4.5.1.

Results: The findings supported the two-factor model proposed by Markus and Kitayama, with fit indices indicating an acceptable model fit. Three items were removed due to low factor loadings, resulting in a 21-item Persian version of the scale. The average variance extracted and composite reliability values demonstrated acceptable convergent validity. Correlations between the SCS, the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), and the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood Scale (TIV) provided evidence for concurrent validity. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the total scale was 0.703, confirming the reliability and suitability of the Persian version of the SCS for use in Iranian samples.
Discussion and conclusion: The Persian version of the Self-Construal Scale demonstrated a clear two-factor structure and satisfactory psychometric properties within the Iranian context, supporting its applicability in both cultural and clinical research.
