Abstract
Introduction: The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of mindfulness-based therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy on obsessive-compulsive symptoms in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Method: The present study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up assessments, including a control group. The statistical population consisted of female patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder who visited the Neurology Clinic of Ibn Sina Hospital in Mashhad in 2024. After screening and initial diagnosis, 45 participants were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to three groups of 15 individuals each: two experimental groups and one control group. Data were collected using the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R). The experimental groups underwent either mindfulness-based therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy in eight 90-minute sessions, conducted once weekly. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test.
Results: The results showed that obsessive-compulsive symptoms decreased significantly in both the mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral groups from pre-test to post-test and follow-up (P < 0.001), with a greater effect observed in the mindfulness group.
Discussion and conclusion: In general, the results indicate that both treatment approaches are effective in reducing patients' obsessive-compulsive symptoms and play a significant role in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder.
