Sexual dysfunctions are highly prevalent among patients with psychiatric disorders. These dysfunctions may be caused by the psychopathology and pharmacotherapy of the psychiatric disorders. A lot of researches have studied the relationship between sexual dysfunctions and psychiatric disorders. The results of the researches show that psychiatric disorders have an important role in the development of sexual dysfunctions. Positive (e.g., psychosis, hallucinations) and negative symptoms (e.g., anhedonia) of schizophrenia may have a negative impact on interpersonal and sexual relationships. Depression and mood disorders may affect libido, sexual arousal, orgasm, and erectile function. Classic antipsychotics might have more sexual side-effects than second generation antipsychotics on sexual functions. Moreover, anxiety disorders affect sexual dysfunctions such as sexual desire disorder, erectile dysfunction and orgasm problems. Patients with eating disorders may suffer from sexual difficulties. Personality disorders, especially borderline personality disorder, are also associated with sexual dysfunctions. In spite of these results, research in this field has substantial methodological limitations which should be considered in the future researches.
