The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Marital Satisfaction: The Mediating Role of Religious and Spiritual Struggles

Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between unfortunate childhood experiences and marital satisfaction with the mediating role of religious and spiritual struggles.

Method: This was a kind of correlation study. The society studied all couples in Tehran who spend between 1 and 40 years of marriage, of those, they formed that 240 people were selected from this community using the available method. To collect the data from the short form, Enrich Couple Satisfaction Scale (1989), The scale of religious and spiritual (RSSS) Exline et al. (2014) and Bernstein et al. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was used. The data collected by Pearson correlation test and structural equation modeling were analyzed with the help of software Microsoft Amos and SPSS 25.

Results: The findings of this study indicated that the relationship between childhood trauma and spiritual struggles is significant (05/0P‌). The role model mediates religious and spiritual struggles in the relationship between childhood trauma and marital satisfaction is well-fitting (RMSEA=0.081, NFI= 0.93, IFI=0.93, GFI= 0.91, CFI=0.91). According to the results of the Sobel test, childhood trauma has influenced marital satisfaction with the mediating role of religious and spiritual struggles.

Conclusion: As a result, it can be said that the variable of religious and spiritual struggles has a significant mediating role in the relationship between childhood trauma and marital satisfaction. Therefore, it is necessary to take action to prevent and treat it by informing about the consequences of irreparable harm to the unfortunate harm of childhood.
