The Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Schema Therapy on Anxiety , Quality of life and Frustration Tolerance of Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

Aim and Background: Multiple‌ sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease and the cause of many disabilities in people with this disease. Set of symptoms and the chronic nature of this disease, together enhance the mental state of the person and cause wider psychological symptoms worsening disease. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based schema therapy on anxiety, quality of life and frustration tolerance of patients with multiple sclerosis.

Methods and Materials: The method of this study was semi‌-experimental with pretest-posttest and control group. From the statistical population that included all people with multiple sclerosis in Shahrekord, 30 people were purposefully selected and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The group-based intervention was performed in the experimental group in 8 sessions. The instruments used in the study included the Young maladaptive schemas questionnaire, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), MS Quality of Life Scale (MSQOL) and Herrington Frustration Tolerance Questionnaire that people answered the questions in the pre-test and post-test stages.Analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data.

Findings: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of anxiety, quality of life and Frustration tolerance (p <0.001).

Conclusions: According to the results, mindfulness-based schema therapy reduces anxiety, increases quality of life and increases Frustration tolerance in the experimental group compared to the control group.
