Introduction: Craving has attracted the attention of many researchers who study factors related to substance abuse. The present study aimed to investigate the structural equation model of craving in patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment based on personality traits and time perspective.
Method: The present research design was fundamental in terms of its purpose and descriptive-cross-sectional in terms of its method of collecting data, using the correlational structural equation modeling method. The research population consisted of patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment in Tehran, and the sample included 270 individuals selected through convenience sampling. For the present study, Drug Craving Questionnaire, NEO Personality Inventory, and Time Perspective Inventory were used and data were analyzed using SPSS 21 and AMOS 21 software.
Results: The proposed model has a good fit. In addition, the direct effect of personality traits on craving and time perspective is significant. Personality traits can predict drug craving in patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment through time perspective. The results of the model fitting showed that the personality traits of neuroticism and conscientiousness indirectly affect drug craving through time perspective.
Discussion and Conclusion: Time perspective plays a protective role against relapse and paying attention to it can be of great importance in the treatment of drug cravings. Therefore, it is recommended that this construct be used to enhance the psychological health of patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment.
