Introduction: In recent decades, many studies have investigated the role of schemas and emotion regulation in marital dissatisfaction and divorce but they have ignored psychological factors of emotional divorce. The purpose of the current study is to predict couples' emotional divorce based on early maladaptive schemas, emotion regulation and its components.
Method: The research population was all the couples of Mehr and Lamard cities. 165 individual were selected by available sampling after completing questionnaires of Gottman's emotional divorce, marital instability index, divorce probability and Enrich marital satisfaction. Young Schemas Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF) was used for the measurement of early maladaptive schemas and emotion regulation questionnaire by Gross and John was used for the measurement of emotion regulation. The results were analyzed by Pearson Correlation Method and Stepwise Regression Analysis.
Results: The results indicate that early maladaptive schemas of emotional deprivation, shame/defect, enmeshment, subjugation, self-sacrifice, emotional inhibition and emotional suppression components in emotion regulation are related to emotional divorce. "Self-sacrifice" schema and "emotional suppression" were the best predictors of couples' emotional divorce in stepwise regression analysis, respectively.
Discussion and Conclusion: We can predict couples' emotional divorce by early maladaptive schemas and emotion regulation and also develop an approach based on these patterns to prevent cold marital relationship and treat them based on schema therapy approach and emotion regulation management. We can use the finding of the research in clinical and counseling environment to help the couples in trouble and those who are on the brink of divorce.
