Introduction:
The presence of intellectual disabilities, in addition to causing many problems for the child, also brings many challenges to the family members, especially the main caregiver of the child. Based on this, this research was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of Solution Focused Therapy on family functioning and resilience of mothers with slow-walking children.
Method:
The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included mothers with slow-paced children at the Mashhad Rehabilitation Center in 2023, 30 of whom were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two groups of 15: experimental and control. Data were collected using family functioning and resilience questionnaires. Initially, a pre-test was administered to both groups, and then the experimental group underwent solution-focused therapy for 8 90-minute sessions, once a week, while the control group did not receive any intervention and remained on the waiting list. After completing the sessions, a post-test was administered to both groups and the data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results:
The results showed that there was a significant difference between the mean post-test scores of family functioning and resilience in the experimental group after removing the pre-test effect, such that the mean post-test scores of the experimental group in the variables of family functioning and resilience were higher than those of the control group, and solution-focused therapy increased the score of family functioning and resilience in the experimental group in the post-test stage, compared to the control group, and solution-focused therapy was effective on family functioning and resilience of mothers with slow-paced children (P<0.001).
Discussion and Conclusion:
In general, the results indicated that Solution Focused Therapy can be effective as an effective approach to improve family functioning and resilience. Based on this, it is suggested that Solution Focused Therapy be used by specialists in order to increase the psychological capabilities of mothers with slow-walking children
