English

Introduction: Various factors at the personality and psychological levels, such as attachment styles, both separately and in interaction with each other, affect the relationship between couples and lead to an increase in their tendency toward marital infidelity. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparitive study of the effectiveness of individual and couple emotion-focused therapy on experience in close relationship- relationship structure (attachment security) in couples with extramarital relationships.
Method: This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design, including a control group and a follow-up of 2 months. The statistical population consisted of all couples with extramarital relationships in Karaj city during the autumn of 2024. In the first stage, 60 couples were selected and then randomly divided into 2 experimental groups (each group consisting of 15 couples) and 2 control groups (each group also consisting of 15 couples). The experimental group underwent emotion-focused therapy by Greenberg & Goldman (2008), while the control group received no training and remained on the waiting list. To collect data, the Experience in Close Relationships - Relationship Structure (ECR-RS) scale developed by Fraley et al. (2011) was used. Data analysis was performed using SPSS-28 software, employing analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni correction.
Results: The results of the study showed that individual and couple emotion-focused therapy had a significant effect on attachment security (P<0.05). In addition, the results of the Bonferroni post hoc test indicated that couple emotion-focused therapy is more effective than individual emotion-focused therapy on the close relationship structure (attachment security) in couples with extramarital relationships (P<0.05).
Discussion and conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that individual and couple emotion-focused therapy can be utilized as treatment methods to improve attachment security in couples with extramarital relationships, with priority given to couple emotion-focused therapy.
